What does a parent education consultant do and what will your sessions look like?

My role is to provide you with guidance and direction in raising successful children. As a child developmentalist and clinical social worker, I have over 20 years of experience working with children, adolescents, and families. I understand firsthand the challenges and blessings that come from raising children and want to help you achieve optimal success in your family and lasting peace in your parent/child relationship.

I will help you navigate your child’s developmental milestones, address challenging behaviors that may be creating dysfunction in your family. I will help you implement healthy discipline and loving correction to ensure your child feels loved and grows to be a successful adult.
I will also help you explore your own past hurts, experiences, and traumas as these are often a contributing factor to how you raise your child. Utilizing attachment theory, I will help you understand yourself in relation to your child to improve the parent/child relationship.

I will support you and your family throughout this process with the goal of leaving you with helpful tools to ensure you feel you are the best parent you can be. I will assess your situation, provide recommendations and education, and problem solve with you for the most satisfactory outcome for you, your child, and your family.

Still not sure if consultation is for you?

It’s important that we are both a good fit for one another. If you’re still unsure, here is a list clarifying how I approach consulting and what consulting is not:

If you are looking for solid, simplified, and solution-driven parent education with a direct approach then you’re in the right place!

If you don’t mind being challenged, held accountable, and are open to learning, we would probably work well together!

If you want to get reimbursed from insurance or use insurance to pay for services, parent consulting is not for you as it’s not a reimbursable service.

If you prefer in-person work, then this isn’t the right fit. Currently, I only offer online consultation.

Though I am a licensed therapist, when you hire me as a parent consultant, services can’t cross over. If you need therapy, I am happy to offer a referral to a qualified professional.

Consultation is NOT therapy. Consultation is also not coaching. Please see the differences between coaching and consulting in the FAQs.

Frequently Asked

Questions

What is consultation?

Consultation involves working with an experienced professional who is an authority on a variety of subjects. I educate, guide, direct, advise and help shape strategy. A consulting relationship is not a co-equal partnership as the consultant is the authority on a subject and tells clients what they should do to improve something in their lives (with their permission of course!)

Are consultation services covered or reimbursed by insurance?

No, consultation services are not covered by insurance as they are not considered a healthcare service.

How much does each session cost?

Consulting sessions are $250/hour with packages available. Payment is due at the time of service. Payment can be made with a debit/credit card via Stripe. Most HSA/FSA plans do not consider consultation a healthcare service, so these cards are not accepted. Each session is a minimum of one hour.

Are consulting sessions confidential or HIPAA-Compliant?

While I strive to maintain your privacy to a certain extent, consultation services are not bound by HIPPA or confidentiality laws as they are not healthcare or mental healthcare services.

How long does the initial consultation take?

The initial consultation typically lasts about 60 to 90 minutes. This allows us to thoroughly discuss your family's dynamics and specific needs.

What can I expect during the action plan development stage?

During the action plan development stage, I will create a comprehensive plan that includes practical strategies and techniques tailored to your parenting challenges. You will receive a clear, actionable roadmap to follow.

How often will we meet for ongoing support?

The frequency of our meetings for ongoing support will depend on your specific needs and progress. Typically, we will have regular check-ins, which can be weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly.

What are the benefits of having ongoing support?

Ongoing support ensures that you stay on track with your action plan. It provides you with a reliable partner to help you adapt to changes and overcome new challenges, ensuring the success of your parenting journey.

How is Parent Education Consultation different from Psychotherapy?

I am a licensed mental health professional and am registered as a master’s level credentialed Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker in the State of Washington (LW61326558). I have extensive education and experience in diagnosing and treating mental health issues.

While I am a qualified psychotherapist in private practice, when you enter into a CLIENT/CONSULTANT relationship, you acknowledge and agree that you will not be provided with or receive counseling, therapy, or any other health-related services. Parent education is a separate service. While there are some similarities between consulting and psychotherapy, they are quite different endeavors, and it is important that you understand the differences between them.

Psychotherapy is a healthcare service and is usually reimbursable through health insurance policies. Psychotherapy focuses on identification, diagnosis, and treatment of mental and nervous disorders. The goals of psychotherapy include alleviating symptoms; understanding the underlying dynamics which create symptoms; changing dysfunctional behaviors which are the result of these disorders; and developing new strategies for successfully coping with the psychological challenges and limitations.

This is not true for consulting. Both consulting and psychotherapy utilize knowledge of human behavior, motivation, behavioral change, and interactive counseling techniques. The major differences, however, are in the focus, goals, and level of professional responsibility. Consultation is not a substitute for psychotherapy.

The consultant provides expert advice and solutions, and the success of the enterprise depends on the client's willingness to take risks and try new approaches. The relationship is designed to be more direct and challenging. You can count on your consultant to be honest and straightforward, asking powerful questions and using challenging techniques to move you and your family and/or child forward.

The relationship between the consultant and client often has a power differential due to the consultant’s expertise, however, my goal is to collaborate with you and encourage a more balanced working relationship.

Can I adjust the action plan as needed?

Yes, the action plan is flexible and can be adjusted based on your progress and any changes in your family's dynamics. I will work with you to ensure the plan remains effective.

Will you fix my child?

While this is a valid desire for most parents, I cannot be held responsible for any of the advice or education I provide and cannot be expected to offer a cure or fix your child or you. I do stand behind the techniques and tools that I teach; however, they don’t predict or guarantee a resolution to the problem for which you sought help.

Do you have a cancellation policy?

Yes, I require a 24-hour cancellation otherwise you will be charged the full session fee of $250 per hour. You will be asked to sign a credit card authorization form that gives me permission to store a credit card in my protected payment system and charge that card should you late cancel or no show. If you are not comfortable with your card being stored, I will take payment during the session time.

Let’s Get Started

You’ve taken the first step towards calming the chaos and bringing peace to your life.

Let’s see if we’re a good fit with a free 15-minute consultation, no strings attached! If you like what you hear, let’s continue this journey with a personalized plan that truly works for you.
